Health Minute: Strokes
Can you predict when a stroke could hit?
Yes. Research shows that most hit between 6am and noon which is not too surprising. The meridian bio-clock has the heart doing repair work at the later part of the morning. It can also be tied to a surge in blood pressure when you get up in the morning and start moving around.
What can you do to prevent stokes?
Keep moving your body. Walk at least 3 hours a week.
Get enough sleep. Regular long naps and sleeping more than 9 hours can increase risk. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing!
Don’t drink energy drinks or “diet” soda. Artificial sweeteners and caffeine can make the blood more prone to clotting.
Do something that helps you relax regularly. I recommend getting outdoors and touching the ground.
Don’t smoke or drink. We all know that it isn’t healthy. It can also increase your stroke risk.
How do you know if you are having one?
A HuffPost article using the acronym BE FAST, which stands for:
◦Balance — Sudden loss of coordination
◦Eyes — Blurred vision or vision loss
◦Face — Drooping on one side
◦Arm — Weakening of the limbs
◦Speech — Speech difficulty or slurring of words
◦Time — Call 911 right away
